  • Oral literature is a literary work that is delivered orally (from mouth to mouth). Oral literature is a part of culture that is inherited from generation to generation. This means that oral literature is a culture of society that must be maintained and preserved. Nyama Wurung Jue is a Dayak Ma'anyan tribe wedding ceremony which is guided by someone or some balian. Balian song has a form such as poetry or rhymes, poetry and rhymes that are sang by the balian with musical accompaniment typical of the Dayak Ma'anyan tribe. Balian song has meaning and function that influences the life of the Dayak tribe community Ma'anyan. The purpose of the research was to find out the meaning and function of balian song which was found at the traditional ceremony of Nyama Wurung Jue's Dayak Ma'anyan tribe in Bentot Village. This research used the theory of meaning approach by Roland Barthes and function theory by Alan Dundes. This research is a descriptive qualitative study by describing meaning and function based on data analysis. Based on the results of the research that has been done, the meaning in balian song includes two aspects, namely denotation and connotation. Denotation is the most obvious meaning of existing signs and connotation is a figure word that describes an emotion or feeling. As well as three functions include (1) increasing feeling of solidarity in a group, (2) providing a pleasant escape from reality, and (3) changing the boring work becomes a game.
