  • Dam is a building in the form of landfill, rock bricks, concrete, and stone pairs built to hold and hold the water, it also can be built for withstand and hold waste water, or hold mud so that a reservoir is formed. The beside to obtain certain benefits, has a potential collapse which can cause large losses. According to research, the cause of homogeneous dam break is overtopping and piping. Dam break due to overtopping occurs because of the overflow water in the reservoir through the body of the dam. In the other hand, the collapse of the dam due to piping can not be ascertained by the initial collapse location due to scour caused by seepage occuring inside the dam’s body. Therefore, of the dam break it is necessary to analyze the collapse of the dam to know the disaster and affected areas caused by dam break. The purpose of this research is analyzing the alternative in the various scenario of the dam break using HEC-RAS program version 5.0.3 developed by Hydrolic Engineering Center. The program allows to perform simulations of flooding due to the dam break with the 2D model. In this study, it is conducted a simulation of the overtopping due to the dam break. In addition, to the overtopping the flood in the dam break due to the piping was also simulated. Banyukuwung Dam is a homogeneous dam built at 1996. The downstream of the Banyukuwung Dam is located in Rembang Bay (Java Sea). Banyukuwung Dam break may occur due to the overtopping and piping. Simulations conducted with program HEC-RAS 5.0.3, sugested that a collapse due to the overtopping is a cause of Banyukuwung Dam break showing the greatest impact with a condition of design floods of 0,5PMF, a peak discharge Qinflow 239,9 m3/sec and area puddle 1907,475 ha with high maximum inundation of 7,95 m. As a result of the Banyukuwung Dam break, there are 23 villages in the downstream of the Banyukuwung Dam are exposed to inundation with a number of population exposed to the risk is 17015 inhabitants. The distance of the Banyukuwung Dam to the downstream is only 9 km, it can be concluded that Banyukuwung Dam is classified as a dam with a danger level of 4 which means a very high danger level.
