  • Background: Prisons have long been recognized as a high-risk environment for the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The incidence of tuberculosis is higher among prisonersthan in large population. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of pulmonary TB and to identify risk factors associated with incidence pulmonary TBamong prisonersin a 1st class male prison of Lowokwaru Malang.Methods: Prisonerswhowerenot on TB medicationwereenrolled in the survey. Prisonnursesconducted a onetimemassscreeningusingWHO questionnaire, with follow-upsputumcollection and chestX-rays in TB suspects. Results: Of 1.732 prisoners, 85 (4,9%) were identified as TB suspects, 4 (28,6%) were bacteriologically confirmed by sputum smear, and 10 (71,45%) were confirmed by chest X-rays, for a prevalence of 14/1.732 (0,8%). The risk of pulmonary TB infection found in prisoners who have nutritional status underweight (p 0,001) and length of stay in prison (cutoff: 18 months), (p=0,007); OR 6,9 I 95% CI: 1,440 I 33,140).Conclusion:TB prevalence in this survey remained high than in large population. Underweight nutritional status and length of stay in prisonis risk factorsassociated with pulmonary TB infection. Key words: prisons; tuberculosis; screening; Malang
