  • Tofu wastewater is a main problem in controlling environment impact because it contains high organic matters and results in several effects such as polluting river flow, damaging ecosystem around tofu industrial environment, and causing pungent odor when it is left too long. One of alternatives to treat tofu wastewater is using horizontal bio-filter by adding active micro-organism namely EM4 containing a group of various micro-organisms participating to degrade organic materials such as lactic acid bacteria, photosynthetic bacteria, Actinomycetes, and fermentation fungi. In treating tofu wastewater using horizontal bio-filter where gravel and sand became the buffer media to grow micro-organism. The study aimed to achieve the precise concentration of EM4 for each filter media in degrading organic content of tofu wastewater. The study was conducted in Bio-industry Laboratory, Agro-Industrial Technology, University of Brawijaya. The design of study was experimental design using Randomized Block Design with two factors and four repetitions. They were Factor A (Filter Type) consisting of two levels namely gravel and sand; and Factor B (adding the concentration of EM4) consisting of three levels namely non-addition, 1%, and 2% of waste total volume. The result data of tofu wastewater parameters (BOD, COD, TSS and pH) would then be treated by various analysis of ANOVA (Analysis of Variant) to identify the effect between treatments. When the effect took place, DMRT testing followed. This study treated tofu wastewater containing organic represented by values of BOD, COD, TSS, and pH namely 2027 mg/l, 7310 mg/l, 1430 mg/l and 3,7 respectively. The best treatment for tofu wastewater was sand filter by adding 1% EM4 concentration. The results of tofu wastewater treatment were BOD, COD, TSS and pH values namely 800 mg/l, 2317 mg/l, 403,2 mg/l and 6,45 respectively.
