- Direct Governor election (pilgub) in the province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) was held on May 13, 2013. In this governor election, Tuan Guru Bajang (TGB) was elected for the second time. Throughout the history of direct governor elections, incumbent victory in NTB was for the first time. TGB is an incumbent figure as a political representation of young people and also religious figure well known in NTB. This is due to the support of Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) as a non-political organization as one of political machines working best for TGB victory. In addition, the combined support of major political parties in Indonesia, such as the Democratic Party, Golkar, PDIP, PAN, PKB, PPP, and Gerindra were very helpful as the voice sources of the incumbent. Modality approach proposed by Pierre Bourdieu became the basis of primary analysis in this work, supported by the modality theory of Kacung Maridjan, particularly political capital. In addition, a framework of election was also used as an arena limitation in the use of modalities and habitus or character of the people who have been formed by the structure to be main pillars that must be supported by modality. The modality included political capital, economic capital, social and cultural capital, and symbolic capital. In addition, this paper used three data collection techniques: observation, interviews, and literature. Result of the research found that the political modality had a dominant influence, because TGB as an incumbent figure had greater opportunity to demonstrate his achievement or performance so as to gain the confidence (trust) of the society. In addition, the modality would work best if it was well organized and in line with the character of the community. Organizing modality was important, because each modality owned by TGB can function optimally. Furthermore, observing character of the community was necessary to do in order that the modality could be accepted well. Therefore, modality alignment to character of the people in the governor election arena was the main point in this study.
