  • This paper is written to elaborate the validity of rainfall estimated from satellite data. The satellite, namely, MTSAT (Multi-functional Transport Satellite), collects data on East Asia and West Pacific including territories which lack of observation such as ocean, desert and mountain. In order to do the research, satellite data and rainfall data (obtained from raingauge) are collected from year 2000 to 2003 (4 years period). As the territories of research are Bandung, Jakarta and Bogor. Compatibility level of satellite estimated rainfall (which based on black body assume and estimation equation as cloud top temperature function) to observed rainfall is less than 50 percent or the maximum correlation coefficient between estimated rainfall with observed rainfall for Bandung is 0.36; for Bogor is 0.21 and for Jakarta is 0.34 The higher value on rainfall temporal variation, the less likely satellite estimated rainfall to be valid. As a conclusion, estimation method for prediction of early seasons, floods and landslides need to be renewed.
