  • Caries is a unique multifactorial infectious disease, which genetic and environmental factors can influence the pathogenesis of this disease. Genetic variations of immune response from host may contribute to increased risks for dental caries. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes, which are the most polymorphic genes in the genome, have important roles in the immune response to dental caries, since they can bind the peptide antigen from cariogenic bacteria. The purpose of this study is to give a short overview of the contribution of HLA polymorphism in the susceptibility to dental caries. It was reported that the genes within HLA complex were associated with altered enamel development and increased susceptibility to dental caries. Some variant of HLA class II molecules had been reported having correlation with lower IgA activity to cariogenic bacteria, and their frequency was increased in subject prone caries. Some specific HLA alleles also had been reported having significant association with high caries index. Thus, it can be concluded that polymorphism of HLA class II molecules may be influence individual susceptibility to dental caries. Key words : HLA polymorphism, dental caries, susceptibility
