  • The Ministry of Forestry in Indonesia and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) implement technical cooperation entitled as “Project on Capacity Building for Restoration of Ecosystems in Conservation Areas” during 5 years since 2010 to 2015. The purpose of this Project is to strengthen capacity of relevant stakeholders for restoration of degraded ecosystems in conservation areas. Sembilang National Park is one of 5 project sites in Indonesia for trial restoration. Mangrove ecosystem in Sembilang National Park covers 87,000 Ha in the year of 2001, the widest mangrove area in the western Indonesia. However, those Mangrove areas have experienced serious deforestation as large as 3,552 Ha during 2001-2009. One of the causes of Mangrove degradation is fish pond development. The Project conducts trial restoration in degraded areas as large as 200 Ha which consists of active fish ponds and already abandoned ones. To implement mangrove trial restoration, several activities have been done, i.e. (1) study of the prospective restoration field from October 2010 to March 2011; (2) first year mangrove trial restoration from: April 2011 to March 2012; and (3) second year mangrove trial restoration from April 2012 to March 2013. Data gathered from planted mangrove will be measured regularly until 2014. Those collected data will be utilized in the process of formulating mangrove restoration guidelines.
