- Water supply for plant growth are depending on water diffusion from sub-soil to top soil during dry season, and water diffusion from sub-soil to top-soil was depent on soil texture. The subject of this study was water diffusion rate on various soil textures. Five different soil textures were used and then mixtured of two soils which conduct low and high diffusion rate were also measured. Measurement of water diffusion were using plastic pipe, its diameter is 8 cm and 120 cm length. After six weeks measurement, the results show that the highest water diffusion (up to 97 cm was reached by sandy loam soil and the lowest (up to 40 cm) was by clay soil. This tendency was similar from the first week up to the six week of experiment. This was caused by smaller capillary pores in clay but bigger in sandy loam. Water diffusion rate was also high (63 cm/week) in sandy loam and slow (about 17 cm/week) in clay. The rate was high during the first week but ______________ 1) Didanai Oleh Direktorat Jendral Pendidikan Tinggi 2) Dosen Jurusan Tanah Fakultas Pertanian Unsri, Kampus Indralaya. 2 very slow afterward. This due to the more distance was from soil water table thus the more tension was on capillary water or the more meniscus angle between water and pore wall. The mixture of clay (50% volume) and sandy loam (50% volume) has increased water diffusion from about 42 in clay to 75 cm high in mixture texture. This means that addition of loam to clay or sandy soil can raise its water diffusion. It may conclude that water diffusion are slow and low in clay and sandy soil but it was fast and high on loamy soil.
