  • The aim of this study is to find out how the rulers and the inhabitants of Palembang performed Islam as their faith in the period of Palembang Sultanate. Inevitably, there were some negative writings in colonial achieves and journals mentioning that Islam was not performed well by the inhabitants of Palembang during the Sultanate period. The people were still with their traditional and old beliefs. It was totally different from the new comers of Arabian ethnic who performed Islam tenaciously. From the results of study, it showed that the unilateral view of the colonialists was derived from their lack of understanding to the real life condition of the local rulers and inhabitants. Generally, those colonialists lived in the capital city of Palembang so that they did not really know about the implementation of Islam in the rural areas (uluan). Actually, these negative views of the local inhabitants of Palembang were most likely a glancing view. Neither, was there a further nor direct observation toward the daily life of the viewed community. In addition, the lack of understanding toward the local language-culture might also influence the validity of the views. The facts showed that after the fall of the Aceh Sultanate, Palembang and Banjar took the position as two important places for the central development of Islam from the middle of the 18th century until the 19th century. There were many popular theologians rose in Palembang. In fact, these theologians were not only well-known in the Archipelago but also Patani, Thailand. These theologians had a great role in developing the religion of Islam in those areas, especially Palembang. Some theologians had recorded their names in uluan area. They were Syekh Syihabuddin bin Abdullah Muhammad, Abd Shamad Al-Palimbani, Kemas Fakhruddin, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, Pangeran Panembahan Bupati, Muhammad Muhyiddin bin Syekh Dyihabuddin, Kemas Muhammad bin Ahmad and others. Next period, some other theologians were also risen in uluan, such as Tuan Tanjung Idrus Salam, Kemas Jambu, Syekh Habibul Hamim (Komering region), Bujang Jawe, Penghulu Haji Pidin, Pangeran Abuleman (Rawas region). Besides these theologians, there were also some envoys of the Sultanate who actively Islamized and guided the inhabitants of uluan in terms of the implementation of their faith of Islam. From the results of this study, therefore, we have to place all the negative views coming from the past colonialists carefully by presenting some supporting facts and evidences in the existence of Islam in Palembang Sultanate
