- A research to identify the effect of the presence of sulphuric zone in acid sulphate soil on the growth of mungbean plant was done with factorial randomized block design. Mungbean varieties of No. 129, Parkit, and Sriti were planted in 4 inches diameter of paralon PVC and 45 cm height. The parallon was filled with acid soils, and the depth of sulfuric zone was 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm from the soil surface. The result showed that the depth of sulphuric zone affected the growth of mungbean. The closer of sulphuric zone to the soil surface, the greater its effect on plant height, leaf area, plant dry weight, and root density. The presence of sulphuric zone also affected to the establishment of plant pod. The effect of sulphuric zone to the varieties showed the different of variety tolerances. Parkit variety showed the most tolerance variety compared to the other two varieties. Variety of No. 129 was the weakest variety shown by the decrease of all parameter until 85 % at the 10 cm depth of sulphuric zone treatment, and there was no pod for all sulphuric zone treatment. On the other hand, Parkit and Sriti varieties could produce their pods, and the number of pod decrease with the closer of sulphuric zone to the soil surface. Moreover, the result showed that sulphuric layer affected more the growth of shoot than those of root. Key Words: mungbean, acid sulphate soil, sulphuric zone
