  • This research was carried out to know the effect of some environmental factors on the mangrove seedling growth and photosynthesis. All experiment was done in Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The experiments were done from January to June 2009. Five seedlings were used per seedling age per mangrove species of Rhiropora apiculata and Rhizopora mucronata, and they all put in the shading treatment place. Shading treatment was 0%, 50%, 60%, and 90% from normal solar light intensity. The result shows that the combination of 1-month-old Rhiropora apiculata under 50 % shading, 4-month-old Rhizopora mucronata under 60% shading, and 4- and 6-month-old of Rhizopora mucronata under 60 % shading were obviously good for the growth of seedlings. Photosynthesis leaf of mangrove seedlings of Rhizopora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza was measured using portable photosynthetic measurement LI-6400. Rhizopora mucronata showed higher values on photosynthetic rate, optimum temperature, and light intensity than Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Morover, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza shows higher maximum value of CO2 concentration point than that of C3 plant. Keywords: mangrove seedling, shading, leaf photosynthesis.
