  • ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to find out: (1) The argumentative essayachievement of the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program ofSriwijaya University., (2) Kinds of errors in the argumentative essays, (3) Possiblecauses of errors in the argumentative essays, (4) Kinds of errors mostly found inthe argumentative essays, and (5) Possible ways to eliminate the errors. Thesamples of this study were 20 fifth semester students that were chosen byemploying stratified sampling from the two different strata. To collect the data,the students were given argumentative essay writing tests. The data were analyzedby using two error taxonomies, namely Surface Strategy Taxonomy andLinguistic Strategy Taxonomy and the percentage of errors found in each category.The result showed that the students’ argumentative achievements are said to beMeeting Standard with 7,9 as the highest score and 4,9 as the lowest score, thekinds of errors found are errors in Grammar, Lexical, Semantic, Syntax, andMechanics as well as errors in Omission, Addition, Misformation, and Misorder.The possible causes of the errors are generalization, first language interference,and carelessness. The study also showed that the kinds of errors mostly found areGrammar and Omission. Some possible ways to eliminate errors are doingremidial teaching by reviewing material concerning the punctuation andconjunction as well as subordinate conjunction and acknowledging the rules andtheory about translation.Keywords: Argumentative Essay, Error Analysis, Linguistic Category Taxonomy, Surface Strategy Taxonomy
