Enhancing the eleventh grade students reading comprehension in expository texts of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang through high 5 strategies

  • This study investigated the significant differences (1) in students’ comprehension achievement in reading expository texts before and after they were taught through High 5 Strategies, and (2) in comprehension achievement of male and female students in reading expository texts. This study used pre-experimental method and applied one group pre-test and post-test as the design. The population-single technique was chosen to sample the participants and there were 44 students were involved in this study. The data were collected by means of reading comprehension test which was administered as pre-test and post-test. In order to maintain the validity of the test, its content validity was checked. The results of test were analyzed statistically by using paired sample t-test and independent ttest. The results of the statistical analysis showed that High 5 Strategies enhanced students’ reading comprehension achievement on expository texts. In addition, there was no difference in the reading comprehension achievement in terms of gender, but there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievement in terms of score categories. In conclusion, High 5 Strategies can enhance comprehension in reading expository texts of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang.
