- AbstractThe objective of this study was to find out whether or not there is any significant difference innarrative writing achievement of the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Bukit Kemuning before andafter they are taught by using SWELL strategy. This study was conducted by using preexperimentalmethod, and one-group pre-test – post-test design was applied. The population ofthe study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bukit Kemuning in the academic year2013/2014 consisting of 268 students of 8 classes. The sample of the study was taken by usingconvenience sampling method and taught for sixteen meetings including the pretest and theposttest. The total number of the sample was 37 students. In order to maintain the validity,content validity was calculated. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. Pairedsample t-test was used to analyze the result of the study. The result showed the mean score ofpre-test was 42.64 and the mean score of post-test was 57.23. The result showed that thedifference between the mean score of the pre-test and the mean score of post-test was 12.39 or29.05%. This means that the students got a significant improvement in the post-test. It indicatesthat SWELL strategy can improve narrative writing of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri1 Bukit Kemuning.Keywords: Narrative paragraph writing achievement, tenth grade students, SWELL(Social Interactive Writing for English Language Learners) Strategy
