THE STUDY OF STUDENTS' WRITING SKILL ON RECOUNT AND DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT CLASS VIII AT STATE ISLAMIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 5 PADANG

- Writing is one of the English skill must be learnt by the students. This research was analyzing the students’ skill at State Islamic Junior High School 5 Padang in writing Genre texts, especially recount and descriptive text. The analysis was focused on components of writing, namely; content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic. In addition, the analysis also focused on students’ mastery on generic structure of genre texts. This research was descriptive research. There were 379 students of class VIII at State Islamic Junior High School 5 Padang Academic Year 2017/2018 as subject of the research. To get the data, the researcher used random sampling to picked the subject of the research. They were 33 respondents. The instrument of this research was written test form. Result of the test was analyzed using the assessment criterion told by Jacob. The result of the test was analyzed together with English teacher of class VIII of State Islamic Junior High School 5 Padang. Based on the result of the research, it was found that students’ writ ing skill was fair. The mean score of students’ writ ing skill based on the components of writing was 68.41 for recount text and 65.55 for descriptive text. The score indicates that most students could not reach Minimum Achievement Criteria (MAC) yet, specified by school was 75. The score also showed that descriptive text is the genre text that had not mastered dominantly by students. In the other hand, the component of writing that had not been mastered mostly by the students was mechanic. These were the students’ mean score for each components; 21.16 for content, 13.68 for organization, 15.07 for vocabulary, 14.02 for language use and for mechanic was 2.58. Meanwhile, the geneneric structure that had not been mastered dominatly is orientation for recount text and description for descriptive text. It can be concluded that the students’ writing skill on recount and descriptive text at class VIII of State Islamic Junior High School 5 Padang still required to be improved. It was suggested to the English teacher to improve the students writing skill and assist them to write the ideas on writing recount and descriptive text.
