  • The students at class VIII of Junior High School 5 Pariaman had many problems in writing. The students had lack of vocabulary, and they got difficulties in generating their idea into written text. Therefore, to improve the students writing ability, it needed an appropriate technique to make learning more effective. One of the technique was Group Investigation Technique. The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is a significant effect on students’ writing ability between the students who were taught by using Group Investigation Technique and those who are taught without using Group Investigation Technique at Class VIII of Junior High School 5 Pariaman. The design of this research was experimental research. The population of this research was all of the students at class VIII of Junior High School 5 Pariaman that consist of 127 students and who were divided into five classes. Then, by using cluster random sampling the researcher took class VIII.4 as the experimental class that consists of 25 students and class VIII.3 as control class that consist of 25 students. In collecting the data, researcher used written test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, the post-test was given after doing treatments for six meetings to determine the effect of using group investigation technique toward sttudents’ writing ability. The data was analyzed by using statistical procedures. T-test was used to analyze the students’ post-test scores. The result of t-test (t calculate) was compared with t table at the level of significant 5% (0.05). The result of study showed that mean score of students’ writing in experimental class (80.40) was higher than the mean score of students’ writing in control class (64.44). It means that teaching writing by using Group Investigation Technique gave significant effect on students’ writing ability. While, t calculated (6.06) is also bigger than t table (2.021). It means that hypothesis was accepted. Statistically, it showed that teaching writing by using Group Investigation Technique gave significant effect toward students’ writing ability at Class VIII of Junior High School 5 Pariaman. So, it is recommended that English teacher should consider the use of Group Investigation Technique as a technique in teaching writing for getting significant effect on students’ writing skill.
