- Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are microorganisms that can cause infection. Overcoming infection so far using antibiotics, but bacteria are known have been resistant to several antibiotics so need to another antibacterial sources. One of the natural sources can be utilized is clove leaf (Syzygium aromaticum). This study aims to determine the types of compounds contained in clove leaves and determine inhibitory activity. Study begins with extraction using maceration techniques, then the separation of compounds through fractionation of ethanol, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate. Further step is the identification of secondary metabolites of clove leaf compounds using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). The results showed the ethyl acetate fraction was the most active in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with a minimum inhibitory value (MIC) of 10%. The content of chemical compounds from ethyl acetate fraction were caffeine and eugenol with 23.36 and 11.08% value.
