  • ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to find out whether 1) short story reading technique is able to improve students’ vocabulary or not, 2) students’ perception towards the implementation of short story reading technique which has been stimulated during the treatments. The subject was second grade of SMAN 2 Tumijajar. Moreover, the designs used were quantitative analysis and descriptive qualitative which used vocabulary test and questionnaire as the instruments of the research. The data analysed by using Paired- Samples Test in order to know the students’ difference in vocabulary mastery. In addition, 7C’s Students’ Perception Questionnaire was used in order to analyse the students’ perception towards short story reading technique which has been stimulated during the treatments. The result of the research showed that the implementation of short story reading technique is able to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It is determined after analyzing the data using Paired-T Test, the significant (0.00) is lower than alpha level (0.05). It shows that there is significant difference of students’ vocabulary mastery results in both pre-test and post-test. In addition, the result of questionnaire shows that short story reading technique is an effective technique to improve students’ perception. The result of all aspects of 7C’s students’ perception is good, it indicates positive students’ perception of short story reading.
