  • Speaking skills constitute one of language skills the students of senior high schools need to master. However, the majority of the students still found it hard to speak in English. There were number factors to influence their low capability of speaking, one of which was their lack of confidence to speak in English. Numerous studies showed that retelling story enabled students to improve their capability of speaking as it actively and unconsciously encourages the students to practice speaking. The current study was, therefore, intended to investigate i) the effect of retelling story technique on the students’ speaking skills/achievement, and ii) the relationship between the students’ responses and the students’ speaking achievement. One-group pretest-posttest design was employed as the design of the study. The subjects were 30 students of class X IPS 3 at SMA N 1 Gadingrejo, Pringsewu in the academic year 2019/2020. The data were measured using Repeated Measure T-Test and Paired Sample T-Test of SPSS 22.0 version for windows. The results showed that there was statistically significant improvement of the students’ speaking achievement after the students were taught through the Retelling Story Technique with the significant level 0.05. This indicates that the technique was effective to improve the students’ speaking achievement. Furthermore, there was a positive relationship between the student’s responses and their speaking achievement. That is, the more positive the students gave responses or perceived the technique, the better their speaking achievement was. This indicates that the technique facilitates students to improve their capability of speaking. Keywords: speaking skills, retelling story technique, a physical object
