- Speaking is oral communication between the listener and the speaker to express an idea, thought, and feeling that involves the productive skill of understanding. When the students spoke in English, they had a problem to explore their ability to speak because they lack knowledge of speaking. Consequently, in order to minimize the student’s speaking problem, the researcher applied information gap as the technique to improve the students’ speaking achievement. The objective of this research was to find out whether there is a significant improvement on students’ speaking achievement after being taught by using information gap technique at the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung. The subject of this research was one class consisting of twenty-three students of the second grade of SMP Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2019/2020. This research used one group pretest-posttest design by giving pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The instrument of this research was speaking test. There were two raters to score students’ speaking performance. The data in the form of scores were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test. The result of the research showed that the value of significant level was 0.00<0.05. Furthermore, there was an improvement of students’ pre-test score to the post-test scores (53.7 up to 70.1) and the gain was 16.3. It means that there was a significant improvement on students’ speaking achievement after being taught by using information gap technique. Overall, regarding to the result above, it can be concluded that information gap technique can be applied to the students at SMP level to improve their speaking and recommended as one of references to teach English in speaking class.
