- Vocabulary is an important aspect in learning a language. When learners are learning a new language, they should have enough vocabulary in order to make use of their language into four language skills that are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Without vocabularies, speakers cannot convey the meaning and communicate with each other in a particular language. Therefore, it is important to choose an appropriate medium in teaching vocabulary. The objectives are to find out whether there is difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught through realia and to analyze their difficulties during teaching learning process. The population is the students of SMPN 26 Bandar Lampung and the subjects of the research were 27 students of class VII E. This research used quantitative method. Vocabulary test and questionnaire were used as the instruments. The data in form of scores were analyzed using Repeated measures T-Test through SPSS 16. The results of the research show that there is difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using realia. It could be seen from the mean scores of pre-test and post-test, that is 58.7 in the pre-test and increases to 66.5 in the post-test. The gain is 7.8. Nouns improved the most while adverbs the least. During the learning process, the students have some difficulties, such as in pronuncing difficult words and difficult to understand the words with multiple meaning. In conclusion, the use of realia made the students more interest and easy to understand in teaching process so that it can be as a good medium for improving the students’ vocabulary mastery. Even though, in learning process the students faced some difficulties, there is no bad effect of their vocabulary mastery.
