ON THE NUMBER AND MOTILITY SPERM OF WHITE RAT (Rattus norvegicus) Sprague Dawley STRAIN INDUCED BY GENTAMICIN By ALVIRA BALQIS SORAYA Background: Indonesia has the prevalence of infertility as many as 2,647,695 of the 238 million population. Infertility can be caused by external factors such as antibiotics. Gentamicin is an antibiotic that can induce oxidative stress in the male reproductive tract and cause damage spermatogenesis. Tomatoes have a lot of antioxidant content of one of them, lycopene which could potentially stop the oxidative damage. Methods: The study is experimental for 24 days. The sample consists of 30 white rats Sprague dawley divided into 5 groups, K1 is the negative control (K1) which isn‟t give gentamicin in 10 days and tomato juice in 24 days, K2 is the control positive which is only give gentamicin 20 mg/kg for 10 days, P1, P2 and P3 Gentamicin is induced 20 mg/kg for 10 days and then give tomato juice 25% (P1), 50% (P2), and 100% (P3) for 24 days. The parameters observed is the number and motility of spermatozoa. Results: Analysis using One Way Anova showed 0.170 for spermatozoa counts and 0,000 for motility. The highest number were found in the P3 group was followed by P2, P1, K1, positive control (K2). While on motility were found in negative control group (K1) followed by P3, P2, P1, and positive control group (K2). Conclusion: There was no effect of tomato juice on the number of spermatozoa and there was an influence on the motility of spermatozoa induced by gentamicin.
