- This research was aimed to find out the effect of Musical Drama in improving the students’ speaking performance and to find out the speaking performance differences between the students who have high confidence and those with low confidence. There were three variables in this research; Musical Drama as the Independent Variable, Speaking Performance as the dependent Variable and the Students’ Confidence as the Moderating Variable. The design of this study was quasi experimental research. Conducted in SMA Darma Bangsa, this research involved 28 students of grade XI. The results of the research showed that there was a significant improvement in the students’ speaking performance after being taught using musical drama. The minimum score of the pretest was 53, the maximum score was 80 and the mean was 66.46. While for the post test, the minimum score was 55, the maximum score was 87 and the mean was 71.75. The Significant value of the paired sample t-test was 0.000 which is lower than 0.05 in which t-value is higher than t-table (8.078 >2.052). There was also significant difference in students’ speaking performance between the students who have high confidence with those who have low confidence. It was revealed from t-value of the independent t-test which was higher than t-table with the significance level of less than 0.05 (5.131>2.056) (0.00<0.05). Based on the questionaire result, nine students were classified as the students with low self confidence with the average score of 62.22. while another 19 students were classifeied as the students with high self confidence with the average score of 76.26. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Musical Drama is effective for teaching speaking and the students with high confidence speak better than those with low confidence. Thus, teachers are suggested to adopt this strategy in teaching speaking performance.
