- Reading comprehension is one of the important skills that have to be mastered by students. Short story is a kind of reading text that believed has the correlation to the students’ reading achievement. The objectives of this research is to find out whether there is any correlation between using short stories and the students reading comprehension achievemnt in the first year students. The population of this research is the first grade of SMAN 1 Punggur. The samples are the students in class XA1 and XA2. They were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The objective of the test was used as the instrument for data collection, which was administered in the pre-test and post-test. The data gained from this research were statically analysed using independent group t-test through SPSS 16.0 for Windows at the level of significance 0.05. The result of Independent Group T-test calculation showed that tvalue >table (2.122> 2.000) and p < 0.05; and that tvalue >table (2.742> 2.000) and p < 0.05; It means that H1 is accepted that there is a significant direct effect of correlation between using short story and the students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMAN 1 Punggur.
