  • The objective of this research was to find out whether teaching by using clustering technique could give improvement toward students’ descriptive text writing or not and to find out which aspects of writing that improved the most after they have been taught by using clustering technique. This research was quantitative research which used one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research was the first grade students of SMAN 1 Sukau in the academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was X MIPA 1 which consisted of 30 students. The instrument of this study was descriptive text test in essay form. The tests were given to see how far the students improve their descriptive writing ability after the treatment. The test was considered valid because the test was covered by content validity since the material was relevant for the curriculum and syllabus for the first grade of SMAN 1 Sukau. The students’ work was measured based on the scoring criteria of writing proposed by Jacobs that consists of five aspects of writing; they are content, organization, language use, vocabulary and mechanics. Those aspects are things that the test had covered with construct validity. This research was considered reliable because inter-rater reliability had been evaluated in this research to ensure the reliability of the pretest and posttest score. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 16.0. The result of the research showed that t-value (17.55) was higher than t-table (2.042) and the value of significant level was 0.00<0.05. It means that there is an improvement of students’ score in writing descriptive text after the implementation of clustering technique. The mean score of pretest was (58.57) and the mean score of posttest was (71.63). It means the students improved about 12.93. On the other hand, the aspect of writing that improved the most was language use since the percentage of language use aspect improved up to 15.12%. Briefly, referring to the result above, it can be said that clustering technique can be applicable to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text.
