  • ABSTRACT PROMOTING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH EXPLICIT READING STRATEGIES By: WIDIYANINGSIH This research was conducted to find out whether there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension who were taught through explicit and through implicit reading strategy instruction, which aspect of reading comprehension was influenced most by explicit reading strategy instruction, and how students’ perception after being taught by explicit reading strategy instruction. The design of this research was pre-test post-test control group design with two classes; experimental class and control class. The experimental class was treated by explicit reading strategy instruction meanwhile the control class was treated by implicit reading strategy instruction. The instruments of the research were reading test and questionnaire. The subjects were chosen by using random sampling technique, consisted of two classes of eleventh year students of senior high school. The results of the data analysis showed that: (1) There was a significant difference between students who were taught through explicit and through implicit reading strategy instruction (the significant level is 0.004, lower than 0.05). (2) All aspects of reading comprehension were increased. However, determining main idea became the most improved aspect. (3) Concerning students’ perception after being taught by using explicit reading strategy instruction, they seemed to realize that the strategy affected their reading comprehension. It was noted that explicit reading strategy instruction was accepted positively by most students. Finally, it could be concluded that explicit reading strategy instruction could increase the students’ reading comprehension.
