  • According to curriculum the graduates of the Elementary School should master 200-500 words. However, there were a gap between the target curriculum and the reality, the result in the field did not reflect to the target, and it is supposedly because the teachers did not use an appropriate method that can increase the Therefore, the researcher would like to find out the appropriate method for teaching vocabulary especially for the elementary school. So, in this research the researcher has compared the methods of TPR and ALM. The aims of the research are (1) to find out weather or not there is a significant the students who are taught through TPR and those taught through ALM, (2) to determine which one of the two methods is better applied in teaching vocabulary in helping the students to increase their vocabulary achievement. The research was conducted at the fourth year of Elementary School of SD N 1 Pasir Ukir. That was quantitative research and it used Two Group Pretest Posttest Design. There were three classes; they were IVA, IVB, and IVC. The sample was chosen randomly through lottery. The data was gained by administering a set of pretest and posttest to both classes. The three treatments were conducted in both classes. The data was analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0. The hypothesis was tested by using Independent Groups TTest. The test result showed that the gain of posttest in the experimental class 1 was 83.20 and the gain of posttest in the experimental class 2 was 70.83. Probability level (p) was 0.000. It was lower than 0.05. Here, H 0 was rejected. Then, t-ratio is higher than t-table, that is (9.168>2.001) It means that there was a significant diffe vocabulary achievement between those who were taught through TPR and taught through ALM. Then, TPR is better than ALM for teaching vocabulary in helping the students to increase their vocabulary achievement at elementary school.
