  • The research focused on the students’ preferences of elective courses and their reasons in choosing a particular elective course at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Elective courses are the courses offered to the English Department students when they are in the sixth semester. The elective courses offered by the English Department are American Studies, Business English, English for Young Learners, and Translation. The aim of the research was to investigate two problems: (1) the elective courses preferred by the seventh semester students from the most dominant to the least dominant option; and (2) the seventh semester students’ reasons of choosing their particular elective courses. The design of this research was survey design. The population was the seventh semester students of academic year 2005/2006 who currently joined American Studies II, Business English II, English for Young Learners II, and Translation II at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The number of the sample was 36 students. The instrument used to obtain the data was questionnaire in the form of closed and open­ended questions. The result of the study showed that the most dominant elective course elected by the students was Business English (41.7%); the second dominant was Translation (30.6%); the third dominant was English for Young Learners (27.8%); and the least dominant was American Studies (0%). In addition, related to the second problem, it was found that the students’ most dominant reasons in choosing Business English (43.1%) and English for Young Learners (45.8%) was advancement, while the students’ most dominant reason in choosing Translation (43.2%) was miscellaneous reasons.
