- Structure is a crucial part in constructing an English sentence. But some students get difficulties in applying structure, including gerund. This research discussed gerund functioning as subject, nominative predicate, object of verb, and object of preposition. Furthermore, this research focused on error analysis in using gerund made by the fourth semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The aims of this research were to find out the errors in using gerund and reveal the most frequent error made by the fourth semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang in using gerund. This research was descriptive quantitative design which used test as the measurement. Moreover, this research applied cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample and took two classes among eight classes of the fourth semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang, they are D and F classes that consisted of 21 students in each class. Based on the analysis, total errors made by the students were 424; 96 errors or 22.7 % were errors in using gerund functioning as subject; 97 errors or 22.9 % were errors in using gerund functioning as nominative predicate; 128 errors or 30.1 % were errors in using gerund functioning as object of verb; and 103 errors or 24.3 % were errors in using gerund functioning as object of preposition.
