- This research is based on the various criticism models to the government; start from cartoon, novel, wayang story to talk show program includes “Republik Mimpi” and so on, either in the form of printing or electronic mass media. Since, Soeharto fall down from his position as the president of Indonesia for 32 years, and than replaced by his vice president of B.J. Habibie. Since then, any criticism addressed to the government is delivered independently to public, there is no any intimidation and no suppression on the critics, even if it is press. Everybody is free to criticize the government, in any forms of criticism. There is no mass media censorship as that happened in the period of Soeharto. Now, press is free from any suppression, but it still under the certain rules that is responsible press freedom. It means that press is free according to the established rule in the valid Press Regulations. Therefore, researcher is interested to analyze newspaper as a criticism media to the government through article containing wayang stories written by Ki Slamet Gundono in Jawa Pos Daily Newspaper in May 2008 edition. Purpose of this research is to know the meaning (symbol) of criticism in Ki Slamet Gundono’s article through newspaper as the criticism media to the government in Wayang Lindur Column of Jawa Pos daily newspaper on May 2008 edition. Through this research, researcher uses qualitative-interpretative research basic, because the researcher wants to analyze and to interpret each paragraph and sentences containing criticism in Ki Slamet Gundono’s article in Wayang Lindur Column of Jawa Pos, where his writing contains criticism to government in the form of wayang stories. This research type is media text analysis in the form of semiotics analysis using Roland Barthes model. This research analyses two titles. From the research result, it can be concluded that newspaper as a criticism media to the government can be used as an instrument to criticize the government over its injustice in treating the poor people. Researcher proves that those articles containing fiery stricture and sarcasm to the government if the governance system in Indonesia is not run appropriately, because any government that leads Indonesia never care about poor people destiny that make poor people are getting buried in uncertainty condition, such as fuel markup in Indonesia which do not counterbalanced by the increasing labors’ wages or salary. Therefore, any occurrence in Indonesia is presented in wayang story using an instrument or media in the form of newspaper to criticize the government, because mass media especially newspaper is very effective in expressing feelings or rebellion over government’s injustice to its society.
