  • In teaching speaking process, the teachers might get some problems. Exactly the problems faced by the teachers in understanding English are divided into: the linguistic and non­linguistic problems. Linguistic problem is the problem related to the language itself. Meanwhile, non­linguistic problem is the problem that influence the language learning. This study concern with the linguistic and non­linguistic problems faced by the teachers in teaching speaking for ESP Program at Communication Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. By knowing these problems, it is expected to give some contribution to the teachers about the linguistic and non­linguistic problems in teaching speaking. In this study, the writer used descriptive research design. The objects of the study were three teachers who taught speaking in the third semester of ESP Program at Communication Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were the interview and the observation. The result of this study indicated that the problem covered linguistic and non­linguistic problems. The linguistic problems were pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence structure factors. The problems that appeared were the students difficulties to pronounce certain words, limited vocabulary, and had mistake in linguistic problems were the students and time allocation. The teacher had the problem of students because they acted unnatural, worrioeed of making mistake to speak English, had no self confidence, low ability, had no motivation to learn English, and low or un­even participation in learning process. On the other hand, the most dominat problem happened in teaching speaking is time of teaching too long so it is not enough to finish the lesson In conclusion, the teachers who teach speaking for ESP Program at Communication Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang need a special skill. They have to be creative, helpful, and patient. So, the teachers can handle the students in the classroom well.
