  • The language components involve vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In fact, vocabulary is one of sub skills that is important in learning a language and need much attention because it is basic for communication. Most Indonesian students should have good vocabulary knowledge in order to be able to carry on their studies successfully. The study intended to find out of the English ability of vocabulary of the second semester English Department students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year 2008/2009. This study was expected to be useful to contribute some valuable information as a feedback to the English teaching and learning process. The students were chosen because they have learned vocabulary subject in this semester. Another reason that the students were chosen in order to the consideration that the result of the study will be useful for the lecturers to make decision on what to do with the students’ ability of vocabulary in the following semester. The design of this study was descriptive quantitative. The population was all of the students in the second semester English Department of UMM certainly. The sample of this study was 30% from the population that were taken by simple random sampling. The instrument of this study was vocabulary levels test. There were four levels in the test: 2,000 word­level, 3,000 word­level, 5,000 word­level and university word level. Each level consists of thirty words to be tested. This vocabulary levels test used matching format. Each section of the test consists of six words, three of which had to be matched with their equivalent based on the students’ knowledge. The result of the data analysis shows, the students’ ability of vocabulary in the 2,000 word­level had mean score 81.69 that means the students had about excellent to very good ability in this level. In the 3,000 word­level, the students had about good to average ability with mean score 72.18. About the 5,000 word­level, the students had about good to average ability with mean score 56.45. In the university word level, the students had about good to average ability with mean score 66.71. In conclusion, it can be considered to be at high frequency only in the 2,000 word­level.
