- Curriculum is a tool in the hands of the educator to mould the lecturer material in accordance with their ideal goal in their institution. The major textbooks to be used in the class should be indicated on the syllabus. A syllabus serves both the instructor who thus has a clear vision of the overall course and the students by laying out lecturers’ responsibilities by clarifying the elements to be taught and encouraging autonomous learning. Writing II is one of the courses that is offered to the second year students in the fourth semester at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang to write paragraph. The research was conducted to know whether or not the material of “Writing II” was in accordance with English Department syllabus and the difficulties faced by the lecturers when implementing the syllabus. The research design used in this study was a descriptive qualitative design. The research took two lecturers who were teaching “Writing II” at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year of 20052006 as the research subject. The result of the study showed that the material of “Writing II” was some of sequence unmatched with English Department syllabus. The lecturers made their own syllabus to implementing in the classroom. The lecturer difficulties were the English Department syllabus run on a tight schedule and literally could not afford to give time to an extraordinary amount of discovery learning, and a discrepancy between the actual and desirable levels of knowledge or information about writing. The researcher expected that the result of this study would be useful for the teachers, English Department and future researchers. It was suggested that the lecturer should have gained the information, to show that the information has been stored, to show that they now posses knowledge, they will be called upon to perform certain observable acts. In addition the English Department should need reevaluation the material of syllabus, and should up date the references to improve the quality of the material. It was expected that other researchers could make similar researchers or continue it.
