  • Keywords: Representation, superiority, gender violence. Woman existence as illustration in various entertainment media had raised several problems related with woman existence in media today. Were their existence represented women existence, or it was a sign of indirect oppression to women in mass media. Movie is a part of mass media. the capitalism had made women possible to make a work in each parts of human needs, including entertainment area. The research purpose was to understand how the woman representation in mass media, especially in “Suami-Suami Takut Istri (Husband who Afraid of Wives)” movie. The sample was chosen since it had unique title and theme. The research based on semiotic or semiology using Roland Barthes model, as stated by Sobur (2001:111) Roland Barthes was part of generation who followed Ferdinand de Saussure. Semiotic was a science discussed signs in society and showed things build the signs, what law rule them. According to Levi-Strauss, categorization was important in paradigmatic dimension of language. Categorization is an understanding, and in this process was a structure called binary opposition. Binary opposition construction according to Levi-Strauss was an universal and fundamental understanding process. Universal since this process was a physical structure of human brain, and it was specific on species, and not to a culture or society. The research’s scope was “Suami-Suami Takut Istri (Husband who Afraid of Wives)” movie. The movie was chosen since the writer felt the movie had their own uniqueness. The research discussion used semiotic analysis, the analysis unit had been directed, whether in visualization, time and place setting. The research approach was interpretative-qualitative. Data used was cut per scene and changed into still photo format. From all wife representation formed by the movie, there constructed an image that woman, outside her role as violence subject, she actually a gender violence object from society culture discussed by mass media. It also legitimated woman stereotype who owed power (beauty, woman attitude, physical, and financial) they became so powerful. After the research, there hoped that society would be more sensitive in receiving a movie’s attack and considered them first. By that way, media wouldn’t easy to influence and create society as they wanted to.
