- Keywords: unity, paragraph writing, fifth semester students. Paragraph writing is a foundation to write longer writing because paragraphs and longer writing such as essays, articles, or thesis are not different very much except the length. The gist of writing good paragraph consisted of five elements and one of them is unity. This study was aimed at examining unity in the fifth semester students’ paragraph writing at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Furthermore, this study was descriptive quantitative. The data of this study were taken from the test of writing. The population of this study was the fifth semester students who were taking Writing III course. There were 154 students grouped in eight classes. 20% of them were systematically taken as the sample which reached out 30 students. The results of this study showed that the unity in the fifth semester students’ paragraph writing at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang academic year 2007/2008 was excellent. It was proved by the frequency of occurrence of unity achievement was 90,7. There were 6 students (20%) who got the maximum score on their unity, that is 10; 10 students (33,3%) got the score of 9; 5 students (16,6%) got the score of 8; only 1 student (3,3%) got the score of 7 and 1 students (3,3%) got the score of 6. There were some reasons why the students could not get maximum score. First, they did not write 10 sentences as it has been asked. Second, some of their supporting sentences did not support or develop the topic sentence.
