- This researct begun with a phenomenon of the Japanese culture, upon a female artworker, which also known as geisha. The story was reproduced by an American director, Rob Marshall into a movie entitled “Memoirs Of A Geisha” (MOG). The drama movie with Japan Cultural background in the year of 1930’s to the post of World War II, is telling the life of alittle girl, named Chiyo. Who was trafficked by her parents to the house of a geisha (Okiya). Where to become a geisha, complex stage attacted to the value of tradition, economic and conflicts have to be passed. The signs of Japanese custom related to ethics, moral and the value of mizuage (virginity) are also into the movie. The phenomenon of geisha basically is a legend of a Japanese culture. Which still becoming a controvercy. For that reason, the researcher appraised if it was brave action when the frame of geisha was reperfomed, into afilm that would be consume by mass audience which clearly contradictive with its cultural background. The problem statement of this reaserch are ; what the meaning of cultural representation as showed in typhographic symbol in the movie of of MOG and how the messages formed inside the movie. While the objective of this research is to gain an understanding behind the typhographical symbol which represented in the film of MOG and to understand the message inside the movie. This research employ semiotical analysis which appoints to the method of Roland Barthes. This Research is using qualitative research. The researcher is given a bigger opportunity to analyze the signs inside the movie to gain an understanding the meaning of those typhographical signs. As the result, this research shows that the representation of Japanese culture in the movie of MOG tends to give negative interpretation, where the frame’s mistakes are likely happened inside the story. The movie of MOG appraised as a critism, where America sees the legend of a geisha as something absurd. As the mizuage is viewed as something commerced in the story.
