  • Background : Tamanu oil (Calophyllum inophyllum) contains Calophyllolide which functions as an antibacterial. In this research, Tamanu Oil will be formulated in an emulgel preparation with various levels of gelling agent carbomer. Objective : This study aims to determine the effect of variations in gelling agent carbomer on the antibacterial activity of Propionibacterium acnes. Method : Tamanu oil was formulated in an emulgel preparation into 3 formulas with a concentration of gelling agent carbomer 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%. Antibacterial test was carried out using the well method by looking at the diameter of the inhibitory zone formed and measured using a calipers. Data analysis was performed with One-Way Anova. Results and Conclusions : The results of the study showed the average diameter of inhibitory zone in formula I was 10.85 mm (1.085 cm), formula II was 4.92 mm (0.492 cm), and formula III was 6.98 mm (0.698 cm) ). This can be categorized in the medium category antibacterial which is 5 mm - 10 mm. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that there is no effect of variations level in gelling agent carbomer on the antibacterial activity in Propionibacterium acnes.
