  • The study stemming from the proliferation of online dating applications used by some people but not for their intended purposes. This is because researchers are doing research with a view to knowing what motives are used by users of tinder's online dating applications on faculty Social and Political Students 2015 at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The theories used in this study are Uses and gratifications theories developed by kazt and gurevitch, of active individuals seeking and using the media as tools to satisfy needs. The motives used on the theory include four motives according to McQuail that are a diversion motive, a personal connection motive, a personal identity motive, and a surveillance motive. The method used is a survey study method with a descriptive quantitative research approach. Respondents in this study number 31, based on the pre-survey of Muhammadiyah University Faculty Social and Political students by 2015, have Tinder online dating application accounts, have had small talk with one or more Tinder users through chatrooms of five or more users, and have already had advanced chat with their fellow Tinder users through the whatsapp/line/instagram as many as five or more users. Based on the research that has been done, there are several motives that encourage users to use Tinder's online dating applications, which are motives for diversion, personal relationship motives, personal identity motives and surveillance motives. For surveillance hits a score of 22.03 which is the most dominant motive used, for the least motive used is diversion motives hits a score of 14.55, and for other reasons, the respondents answered that using tinder applications is used as a place to look for friends to hang out, watch movies, and hang out.
