- Indonesia is an agrarian country with most of its territory consisting of agricultural land. The excessive use of synthetic fertilizers has an impact on nutrient balance in the soil. Efforts are made to improve soil fertility by utilizing organic matter. Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) usually grows in flooded waters and has fast growth, therefore it can cover the surface of the water. The content of hyacinth can be used as an ingredient for making organic fertilizers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using EM4 activator (Effective Microorganism-4) with different concentrations on hyacinth composting period and N-total of Hyacinth compost. The research method carried out was an experiment with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments are controls, K1, K2, K3, K4, K5 and K6 (5% EM4, 10% EM4, 15% EM4, 20% EM4, 25% EM4 and 30% EM4). The hyacinth plant used is a plant that has 5-10 cm long stems. The parameters used to determine the compost maturity include temperature, pH and physical conditions of compost (shape, color and odor). The results showed that 30% concentration of EM4 had a significant effect to accelerate the process of composting, meanwhile various concentrations of EM4 had no significant effect on the total N-content of compost after the composting period.
