  • Using movies as a learning medium is a potential strategy to increase students’ activity in terms of comprehending the spoken language. In the preliminary observation conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Sampit, the researcher found that the listening score of XI grade students majoring in IPA (Science) was not good enough. One of the reasons that made the listening score of the students not good enough was because those students were not trained by their English teachers to listened audio or movies in mastering listening comprehension. Thus, the statement of the problem is “Do the more students watch movies, the better students listening comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Sampit?” The researcher employs correlation research design since this research was aimed at finding out the correlation between watching English movie and listening skill on XI grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Sampit. In the sample selection, a cluster random sampling was utilized by the researcher. Thus, the students from grade XI majoring in IPA was selected as the sample in which the entire number of the sample comprised 34 students. The researcher employed two types of research instrument to obtain the data, namely questionnaire and document. The finding showed that there was a significant relationship between watching English movie and students’ listening comprehension since the value of correlation coefficient was 0.656. This meant that watching English movie can make students’ listening comprehension better. From these results there is a positive correlation between watching English movies and listening skill in English students. It can be considered that students can be more effective in improving English language skills, either by watching English movie or by listening in English. The researcher hopes that this research will have a positive contribution to English teachers, such as using English movie as a teaching media. The researcher hopes that this study can be reference for investigating not only listening skill but also other language skill such as reading, speaking, and writing in connection with the use of movies as teaching media.
