- The use of various learning models by teachers in SMP Negeri 27 Malang has been done, but has not been able to improve students' critical thinking skills, so we need a new learning model as an alternative solution. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the CBL (Conservation Based Learning) model on the critical thinking skills of students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 27 Malang. This quasy experimental study used a sample of 32 students of class VIII odd semester of 2019, on the material Addictive and Addictive Substances. Retrieval of critical thinking skills data through, instruments, structured interviews, direct observation, and documentation. Student data are analyzed by percentage and categorized; (very high, high, medium, low, very low). The results showed differences in the ability to think critically between the experimental class and the control class, namely the experimental class of critical thinking abilities of very high categories 31%, high categories 35%, moderate categories 27% and low categories 7%. While the control class of critical thinking skills is very high category 0%, high category 6%, medium category 81% and low category 13%. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that CBL learning can improve students' critical thinking skills
