  • . Listening course begins at the first semester, because of transition from Senior High School to college it make many new ELED student feels that Listening course is difficult. It proven by the data that researcher got from ELED office that among 10 listening classes got an average score below 75 and only 3 classes that got an average score above 80. This research employs a qualitative research focusing on linguistic aspect to collect the data. This study aims to know the problem that first semester students in English Language Education Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang faced in listening class. The subjects in this study were 34 students from first semester students of A-J class (2017-2018) that got lowest mean score in Literal listening subject. Open-ended questions and interviews were used in this study. The result of this study shows that there are some problems that first semester student faced in listening class. The problem were related to linguistic aspects. Based on the data obtained, the problem were the speakers’ accent, understanding new vocabulary or finding the key words, different pronounciation, understanding the sound voice due to the audio.
