- ABSTRACT Conventional welding processes are inadequate in welding Aluminum alloys because it high conductivity, repeated heat, and high porosity. Another important problem in welding aluminum-magnesium alloys has a lack of evaporation of alloy elements. Selective evaporation of volatile alloying elements, especially magnesium, causes changes in metal composition, thereby affecting the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of welds. research aims to determine effect of pin depth variation on friction welding of distortion test, tensile test and impact test of AA5083 type aluminum material with the friction stir welding method. Material uses thickness of 3 mm, a length of 350 mm, a width of 100 mm. Welding with variation in the depth of pins 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 2.5 mm. The welding process by adjusting the milling machine at a slope of 1 ° shaft and 1250 Rpm toll rotation and welding time of 60mm / minute.the research was found that smallest distortion is to use a depth variation of 1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 2.5 mm. best tensile strength results at a depth variation of 2.5 mm produce a maximum stress value of 165.5173 MPa, a yield stress of 120.7626 MPa, while an impact test value at a depth of 1.5 mm produces an average impact price of 0.093 Joules / mm2.
