- Welding has an important role in the manufacturing industry especially in the process of join metals. One of metal welding method is Friction Stir Welding (FSW), this type of welding technology uses the heat due to rotating the tools that friction against a welding media. The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of the plunge depth on the friction stir welding to the tensile, hardness and distortion. The material that used in this research is Aluminum 5083. The welding parameters that used are 4 mm plunge diameter, 1500 Rpm spindle rotation, 60 mm / minute feed rate, and 2 ° tool tilt. Plunge depth variations used : 2.1 mm, 2.6 mm, 3.1 mm. The results of this research shows the highest longitudinal distortion (1.21 mm) occurred at a plunge depth of 3.1 mm. The highest tensile strength (123.04 MPa) occurs at a pin depth of 3.1 mm. The highest tensile strain (5.8%) occurs at a plunge depth of 3.1 mm. The highest average Vickers hardness value is found in the Weld Metal compared to HAZ blood and Base Metal.
