  • Generating ideas is the first sub-process of the planning process that has an important role in the beginning of writing that involves the long-term memory of the writer to yield ideas so that this process cannot be separated from writing activities. The aims of this current research are revealing the problems and finding out how the students cope with the problems in generating ideas in writing the thesis proposal. This study was descriptive research by employing survey and interview sections as the method to collect the data. Seventh semester students of English Language Education Department Students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang were involved as subject of this research. The questionnaire as the instrument in survey section was analyzed first by using percentage and also weighted mean then conducting interview for digging more information to the participant. The results of this study indicated that the majority of students experience problems in generating ideas. The problems are developing the topic, finding a theoretical framework, finding a new theory, finding trusted sources or links related to the research ideas, connecting research ideas with theory, evaluating the sources before as a theoretical framework, and also assessing the problem and find a theory that is appropriate with the problem. Some ways were found to cope with those problems, they are discussing with supervisor, discussing with friend, looking for related sources, noting down the important ideas of books or journal, and trying to find related readings contained in the list of references from sources that the researcher read.
