- In the current era of globalization, information has placed Indonesia as part of the world information society, thus requiring the establishment of regulations on information management and communication transactions at the national level so that the development of information technology can be carried out optimally, evenly, and spread to all levels of society in order to improve the life of the nation and country Formulation of the problem in this study : What are the factors causing defamation on social media? And How the Police Efforts in Combating Defamation through Social Media? Primary data sources were obtained directly from the field, secondary data sources from reading material related to the research object, and data collection techniques in the form of interviews with informants at the Jombang Regional Police as a place for collecting primary data. Based on some data the results in the Jombang Regional Police stated that the answers obtained from the existing problems, that the factors that cause someone to commit criminal defamation through social media that is due to internal and external factors. This internal factor appears to originate from within the perpetrator who commits the crime, while external factors arise from outside the perpetrator's self. Then the efforts of the police to tackle criminal acts of defamation through social media are carried out using preventive and repressive measures. This preventive effort is carried out by taking actions that are coaching, directing and socializing. While this repressive effort is carried out by applying criminal sanctions.
