- This research aims to find out the effectiveness of short story to promote vocabulary mastery for young learners. The research subjects were 4th grade students at Muhammadiyah Elementary School 1 of Malang. The researcher took two classes for research samples, they are IV A and IV B. Each class consists of 23 students. The present research applied quasi experimental design. This research was divided into two groups: experimental group and control group. The data were obtained through pre-test and post-test, and they were analyzed using independent sample t-test in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The result of the research showed that the use of short story significantly promoted students’ vocabulary mastery. The data analysis showed that the average pre-test score obtained by the experimental group was 66.95. Meanwhile, the average score of the control group was 57.82. Then, the average post-test in the experimental group was 84.78 and the control group was 76.95. The probability value was .022 <.05 and accordingly, H0 were rejected this study.
