- Background: The prevalence of electronic smokers in Indonesia in 2015 had reached 2.5% since its first introduction in 2005. At the beginning, electronic cigarettes declarewere said to be safe for health. Recent studies have shown that electronic cigarette smoke contains harmful substances similar to conventional cigarettes and are thought to trigger the formation of foam cells in blood vessels as the initial formation of atherosclerotic lesions Objective: To determine the difference in the number of foam cells in the aortic histolopathology of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar) being exposed to electronic cigarette smoke compared to conventional cigarettes. Methods: Experimental research with post-test control only group design. 15 rats were divided into 3 groups : normal group, 3mg nicotine electronic cigarette and 2.3mg kretek cigarette group. The aortic arch was taken to provide histopatologic preparation with HE staining and observed with light microscope (400x). Data was analysed using One-way ANOVA test and Post-Hoc test. Results: The study results showed that the average number of foam cells was found the highest in the 3mg electronic cigarette group. The one-way ANOVA test results showed a significant difference (p = 0,000) between groups, the Post-Hoc Bonferoni test showed a significant difference in the number of foam cells (p = 0,000) between the normal group and all treatment groups and there was a significant difference (p = 0,000) between the 3mg nicotine electronic cigarette group and the 2.3mg kretek cigarette group. Conclusions: The exposure of electronic and conventional cigarette smoke increase the number of foam cell with a significant difference which more foam cells found in the electronic cigarette group.
