- ABSTRACT This study examines that single parent women will do any work for the fulfillment of family needs, therefore the role of a single parent in improving family welfare is necessary to be able to meet family needs both materially and non-materially and their children feel confident that without the presence a father's level of family welfare can be fulfilled well. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type, in determining the research subject using purposive techniques. The data collection techniques used are direct observation, unstructured interviews. While data analysis techniques are using interactive models (Miles and Huberman). The results of this study indicate that the role of women as a single parent in an effort to improve family welfare can be well realized despite several obstacles experienced. The roles performed by single parent women include (1) mother's role, (2) role as head of family, (3) role as breadwinner, (4) role as educator, and (5) role as friend.
